In this week’s Torah portion, Tzav (צו), we delve into a series of commands (מצוות, mitzvot) focused on the kohanim (כהנים, priests) and their sacred duties in the Sanctuary.

The name "Tzav," which is command form of the word "command", highlights the importance of direct and actionable instructions in our spiritual and daily lives. This term, deriving from the root צווה (tzavah), emphasizes the concept of instruction or directive, which carries a sense of urgency and importance. In the context of Leviticus 6:2, it signifies God’s command to Moses regarding the priestly duties.

The Continuous Flame: A Symbol of Perseverance

One of the central themes of Parshat Tzav is the eternal flame (אש תמיד, esh tamid) that must be kept burning on the altar at all times. This perpetual fire is not just a physical requirement but a spiritual symbol as well. It represents the continuous effort and dedication required in our service to God and in our personal growth.

Applying the Eternal Flame to Our Lives

Just as the fire on the altar must never be extinguished, so too must we keep the flame of our commitment to growth, learning, and improvement burning within us.
